An Kindness of Strangers: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Obtain the Job That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my friend was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a big multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the canteen, where we grabbed food, found a table, and started talking to people eating there.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He asked me what I did for a living, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – close to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I ought to seek a role with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student came up to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but straight off told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she said: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for three years. A perk of the job was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his identity, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the courage or self-belief to approach someone at an Ivy League university and request employment. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York led me to a role in Europe where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
