PSG Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.
The Parisian club has now claimed the prestigious cup on 14 different times.
The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.
The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a comfortable win in the match featuring the French league winners and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring in the opening stages.
However, the southern French side fired twice in the closing moments to seize a surprise lead. First, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.
In a remarkable turn of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial equaliser in the final moments to send the contest into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.
From the spot, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored successfully for PSG to complete a 4-1 penalty win.
The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this trophy for the 12th time in the last 13 years.
