Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters
Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
